Mitsubishi’s All-New Triton takes on Borneo ...

20 October 2015, Kota Kinabalu- The Borneo Safari needs no introduction to the world of adventure, having established a reputation over the past 25 years as one of the world’s toughest 4X4 expeditions.

As Sabah’s premier event celebrates its Silver Jubilee this year, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia the official distributor of Mitsubishi vehicles in Malaysia is joining in the festivities by sending one of its all-new Triton 4X4 pick-up trucks into the fray.

All-New Triton Adventure to take part in the Borneo Safari

The Three-Diamond badge is no stranger to adventures in East Malaysia. Pajero and even older Mitsubishi Jeeps had been in the thick of Borneo’s 4X4 action since the Trans Borneo expeditions of the 1980s, which evolved into the Borneo Safari in 1991.

“MMM is glad to participate in the Borneo Safari event this year with the all-new Triton Adventure. Borneo Safari is one of Asia’s most gruelling off-road events and MMM is proud to say that the all-new Triton is set to conquer all terrain obstacles with its off-road driving capabilities,” said Chief Executive Officer of MMM, Mr. Yang Won-Chul.

The new Triton will be entered as a corporate vehicle, piloted by Borneo Safari veterans Paul Si from Sarawak and Lionel Yew from Selangor.

“We are proud to be entrusted by Mitsubishi with this mission, to take on the Borneo Safari in the all-new Triton, which will go in with the absolute minimum of modifications,” said Si, who took part in the 1992 and 2008 events, and has not missed a Safari since 2012.

The Borneo Safari is an extremely tough event, taking the participants through various terrain challenges over eight days and seven nights. It is a challenge for the vehicles as well as the human participants.

“Many participants will have done extensive modifications to their vehicles, some because they have encountered problems in previous events and have learned what are the weaknesses that need to be rectified,” Si said.

“We will try to do it while keeping the Triton as standard as possible … we have to have a winch, and a bullbar for protection and recovery points, and the organisers tell us that tyres with extreme tread patterns are compulsory so that we will need to make some mods to the wheel arch and suspension just to fit these big tyres.

All Geared Up for the Borneo Safari!

The Triton is now being outfitted with the compulsory equipment, including a strong bullbar in front, reinforced rear bumpers, a Warn winch with 9,000-pound pulling capacity and GT Radial Komodo 35” tyres.

“Other than that, we want to show that the standard Triton, as it left the showroom floor, is capable of handling tough terrain. If it looks kind of ordinary compared to the other monsters at the flag-off … well, looking ordinary is actually the whole point.”

Even before crossing the start line, the hero Triton has already completed a long journey, starting out from Kuching, Sarawak early on October 17, passing through Miri, Brunei, Limbang and Lawas before arriving in the Sabah capital  two days and 1,250 kilometres later.

“It performed flawlessly throughout the road drive, with ample power for overtaking and comfortable cruising. Soon, we will see how well it handles the rough stuff,” Si said.

The Borneo Safari will flag off at 9.30am from the Sabah Tourism Board building at Jalan Gaya, Kota Kinabalu. The convoy will then proceed to Penampang for the opening Prologue Special Stages.

Heavy traffic is expected as the event’s growing popularity over the years has swollen the number of entries, from around 20 cars in the early years to 250 last year and around 300 this time around.

Over the next few days, the participants will split into several groups and proceed to various camp sites, including Kampung Sungi and Kg. Tingkolod before tackling the hardcore stretches in the Rundum and Lagud Seberang area in the southwest region of Sabah.

The convoys will then regroup in Tenom town before returning to Kota Kinabalu after eight days on the trails.

More about the all-new Triton

The all-new Triton has been developed to be the “Ultimate Smart Utility Truck”, combining the comfortable interior of a passenger car with the functionality and reliability of a pickup. Muscular, sleek and aerodynamic styling which evokes the form of a well-honed athlete, the all-new Triton also provides generous interior space, ample payload capacity, and class-leading handling.

The front design is characterised by a distinctive grille design which, together with the stylish headlamps, gives a strong 3-dimensional look to the bonnet. Viewed in profile, the all-new Triton has a forward flowing design and a ‘J-line’ between the cabin and rear deck which is an innovative solution to maximize interior space while providing plenty of cargo volume.

Just as the previous generation of the Triton set new standards in the pick-up segment, its successor also brings to the segment first-in-class features such as Push Start Button, Keyless Operation, Xenon HID Headlamps with integrated Daytime Running Lights, Tilt and Telescopic Steering and Paddle Shifters for manual control of the automatic transmission when the driver wants it.

Best-in-class features include most powerful in its class engine performance with maximum output of 178 horsepower, maximum torque of 400Nm and a turning radius of 5.9 metres.

Subsequently, new features in the all-new Triton include 4WD selector, Dual Zone Climate Control, Touch Screen Audio System with Reverse Camera, Auto Headlamps and Wipers.

(Features for each variant may differ.)

In addition, the new Triton comes with an improved and proven 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine with an intercooled Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) which offers High Performance with High Fuel Economy. This technologically-advanced Double Overhead Cam (DOHC) 16-valve turbodiesel engine with a common-rail system now produces 178 PS of power at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm (50 Nm more torque than before) to give the Triton even stronger performance in any conditions.

Imported as a Completely Built-Up (CBU) vehicle from Mitsubishi Motors’ global production hub in Thailand, the all-new Triton is available in five variants for the Malaysian market. The following prices (without insurance, GST inclusive for private registration) are quoted for the all-new Triton in Peninsular Malaysia:

No Variant On-The-Road Price without insurance GST inclusive (RM) Available Colours
1 Triton VGT Adventure Automatic 108,273.68 Earth Green, Pearl White, Shadow Black, Red Solid
2 Triton VGT Automatic 98,549.28 Sterling Silver, Pearl White, Shadow Black
3 Triton VGT Manual 92,114.64

The all-new Triton comes with 2 Years of Free Maintenance and a factory warranty of 3 years or the first 100,000 km.

Offering more comfort and convenience, the 4×4 model now measures 5280mm long (down 15mm), 1815 wide (up 15mm) and 1780mm tall. Ground clearance is rated at 205mm across all 4×4 variants.  Interior dimensions have improved boasting an increase of 20mm in legroom and 10mm more shoulder room.

The Triton is the best-selling model for Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia. Since launch in 2006, over 56,000 units have been sold nationwide. Since 1978, over 4 million units have been sold worldwide.

An efficient 5-speed automatic transmission with Sport mode is available, as well as a 5-speed manual transmission. This is coupled to Mitsubishi’s Easy Select 4WD system which distributes power to the front and rear axles. The Easy Select 4WD system has been continuously improved over two decades and is a robust drivetrain able to handle high torque levels.

Like other Mitsubishi models, High Safety performance is a top priority. The all-new Triton has Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body construction which uses high tensile steel that effectively absorbs and disperses crash energy from all directions while also significantly reducing overall weight. Impact bars has been added within the side doors for additional protection against side collisions.

Other safety features that are standard across the range include dual SRS airbags, a collapsible steering column and anti-intrusion brake pedal, which is made to fold away during an accident. Anti-lock braking (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) is also available. EBD reduces the possibility of skidding when the rear end is light and the wheels may lock up on slippery conditions while braking.
