Jambatan Kedua Sdn. Bhd. is the First Concessionai...

Penang, 25 January 2014 - Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB) today receives five new Electric Mitsubishi i-MIEVs, procured from Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia Sdn Bhd to be commissioned as Patrol Vehicle on the Second Penang Bridge.

Creating a green sustainable future is part of JKSB’s Corporate Social Responsibility and it has always adopted innovative approach to ensure that this project will always be environmentally friendly, less polluting to the marine environment and adopting a minimal maintenance concept in its planning, design and construction.

“As a winner of The International Green Apple Award and as The Green Ambassador for The Green Organisation, UK; JKSB always believes that sustainable development and green technology are the key for a better future,” says YBhg. Dato’ Ir. Dr. Ismail Mohamed Taib, Managing Director of JKSB.

During the construction of the Second Penang Bridge, JKSB had employed an independent environment consultant to monitor the environment and a fisheries expert to conduct the monitoring of the marine life along the bridge’s alignment. The steps taken were to ensure that JKSB would always comply to the requirements set by the Department of Environment.

The Second Penang Bridge project had adopted the Industrialised Building Systems (IBS) to reduce the impact to the environment, installation of the High Natural Rubber Bearing (HNRB), which is apart from providing effective seismic isolation systems it is also maintenance free and the Green Building approach for the Toll Plaza Complexes.

The Second Penang Bridge Toll Plaza Complex is designed for Platinum Criteria of the Green Building Index (GBI), the first in Penang while the PLUS Toll Plaza Complex is designed for Gold Criteria of GBI.

“And now, we are the first concessionaire in Malaysia to deploy electric vehicles as our Patrol Unit, providing assistance to the commuters in distress when using the Second Penang Bridge and its land expressway,” continues Dato’ Ismail.

The use of electric vehicles will not only reduce the emission of CO2 carbon to the atmosphere, but will also reducing the noise pollutions; and these will translate into less money to be spent for maintenance and operations in the long term.

“These electric vehicles will not only use the electricity sourced from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) but also from our renewable energy source, such as the solar panels and wind turbines for charging. These vehicles can run up to a range of 150km from each recharge,” adds Dato’ Ismail.

The solar energy panels are located on the rooftop of both Supervision Building of the Toll Plaza Complexes, while the three wind turbines are located at the Second Penang Bridge’s Surau.

As explained by Dato’ Ismail, these five units electric vehicles will not only be deployed to do patrolling on the Second Penang Bridge, but also on the land expressways that linked the North and South Expressway to the bridge via the new interchange at Valdor; and if the need arises, the number of these electric vehicles may be increased in the future to support the increase in the traffic using the Second Penang Bridge.

The Electric Mitsubishi i-MIEV vehicles are handed over to YBhg. Dato’ Ismail Mohamed Taib by Mr. Tetsuya Oda, the Chief Executive Officer of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia in a simple ceremony today, witnessed by YBhg. Tan Sri Dr. Mohd Irwan Serigar bin Abdullah, the Secretary General of Treasury and YBhg. Tan Sri Dr. Sulaiman Mahbob, Chairman of JKSB.

More about Mitsubishi’s EV

MMM has officially launched its 100% Electric Vehicle, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) on 21 March 2013 and has been on sale to the Malaysian public ever since.

100% electric with zero emissions released when driving, yet offering surprising power and a smooth, quiet ride, the i-MiEV is priced at RM136,118.50– (on-the-road without insurance) and made available in two colours – Frost White and 2-tone Red Frost White.

Producing 49 kW of power and 180 Nm of instant torque, the i-MiEV is powered solely by electricity, and can be recharged from a regular home socket. With a top speed of 130 km/h, the four-seater vehicle can run up to 150 kilometres* (93 miles) after charging eight hours at 230 volts. The i-Miev also accelerates strongly and linearly for easy passing. *Measured by NEDC (New European Drive Cycle)

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is based on the gasoline-powered i minicar, but instead of an internal combustion engine, its sole power source is a lithium-ion battery pack powering a permanent magnet electric motor. The 330V battery is located under the floor deck, while the electric motor is housed under the luggage compartment.

Current line-up of Mitsubishi vehicles includes the Mirage ECO car, Lancer GT and Sportbacks sedans, ASX Crossover, Triton pick-up trucks, Pajero Sport and Pajero Exceed SUVs, electric car i-MiEV and the newly launched Attrage.

To date, Mitsubishi Motors operates 59 showrooms (out of which 42 are 3S Centres) and 50 service outlets throughout Malaysia. MMM plans to open another 2 more showrooms by end of the financial year (April 2013-March 2014).
