Kuala Lumpur, 21 March 2013 – Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), the official distributor of Mitsubishi Motors vehicles in Malaysia, has officially launched its 100% Electric Vehicle, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) at its first EV Centre, SAG Star (Chan Sow Lin) today. The i-MiEV is now ready for sale to the Malaysian market.

100% electric with zero emissions released when driving, yet offering surprising power and a smooth, quiet ride, the i-MiEV is priced at RM136,118.50– (on-the-road without insurance) and made available in two colours – Frost White and 2-tone Red Frost White.

The i-MiEV comes with a free 5-Year maintenance package and 5-Year warranty (or 100,00km) package which covers labour cost for periodical vehicle check, air conditioner filter and brake fluid.

The i-MiEV comes standard with 2-DIN Touch Screen Entertainment System with GPS Navigation, Solar tint film, Auto Climate Control Air Conditioner, Double LED Head Lamp, LED Rear Combination Lamp, Auto Light Control, Electric Power Steering, Aero Wiper Blade, Leather wrap steering wheel and shift knob as well as a Charging Cable with Control Box.

The i-MiEV is also capable of an impressive 4.5m turning radius.

For safety purposes, the i-MiEV also offers a number of safety features for greater peace of mind. It comes with 6 Airbags and Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body construction which absorbs impact while providing a rigid occupant cell during a collision.

The i-MiEV batteries also come with advanced safety. The batteries are placed in a waterproof battery pack that is located inside the body frame and enclosed in a well-crib frame to protect against impact damage.

Producing 49 kW of power and 180 Nm of instant torque, the i-MiEV is powered solely by electricity, and can be recharged from a regular home socket. With a top speed of 130 km/h, the four-seater vehicle can run up to 150 kilometres* (93 miles) after charging eight hours at 230 volts. The i-Miev also accelerates strongly and linearly for easy passing. *Measured by NEDC (New European Drive Cycle)

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is based on the gasoline-powered i minicar, but instead of an internal combustion engine, its sole power source is a lithium-ion battery pack powering a permanent magnet electric motor. The 330V battery is located under the floor deck, while the electric motor is housed under the luggage compartment.

First EV Centre

MMM’s first official EV Centre, SAG Star (Chan Sow Lin), is also a 3S (Sales, Service and Spare Parts) centre. It offers as a one-stop EV Sales and Service centre and will come equipped with a free charging facility for all EV customers, with Mitsubishi i-MiEV customers given first priority.

EV Plans

MMM also revealed that it is confident of achieving its i-MiEV sales target of 50 units for the fiscal year ending March 2014 and the plan to expand its EV sales and service network across Peninsular and East Malaysia by opening another four EV centres within the next one year.

“In line with the Malaysian government’s call to reduce carbon emission by 40 per cent by the year 2020, Mitsubishi Motors is happy to offer the Malaysian public a chance to purchase their very own EV and make a choice towards a greener future. Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV is known for many accomplishments in the electric car world,” said Mr. Tetsuya Oda, CEO of MMM.

In Malaysia, the very first unit was registered in October 2011. In the same year, the Mitsubishi EV Eco-tourism Pilot Demonstration Program, in partnership with Four Seasons Resort in Langkawi was launched.

Last year, MMM embarked on the Mitsubishi e-Heroes mission in partnership with Petrosains, offering electric car fun rides to children to promote awareness on ways how they can play their part to create an eco-friendlier future. So far, over 30,000 kids have benefited from this meaningful mission.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia is continuously expanding its sales and service network throughout the country. At present, Mitsubishi Motors operates 54 showrooms (out of which 31 are 3S Centres) and 42 service outlets throughout Malaysia.

More about Mitsubishi’s EV

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV has now been on the market for more than four years since its launch in Japan in July 2009. Since its debut in Japan, the i-MiEV has attracted a lot of attention worldwide, making its steady progress in taking the i-MiEV to the world, following its introduction in European markets at the end of 2010 and launch in North America at the end of 2011.

To date, MMC has produced about 33,000 units of EV, forming alliances with more than 107 local partners in public and private sectors around the world for such measures as joint testing, educational activities regarding the EVs infrastructure required.

Sales to private customers in Japan started in April 2010. Since then, MMC has sold more than 11,434 units of i-MiEV and MINICAB-MiEV in Japan and has exported to 31 countries throughout Europe, U.S., Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Singapore and other markets.

Mitsubishi Motors’ EV development history began with the MINICAB EV in 1969. The company has continued its research and development, concentrating principally on motors and batteries. In 2006, MMC developed the i-MiEV.

For the foreseeable future MMC will focus on developing electric powered vehicles (EV/PHEV). MMC have been launching several new electric-powered vehicles from Fiscal Year 2011 through Fiscal Year 2015 as part of its efforts to reduce environmental impact. This includes introduction of hybrid vehicles to improve fuel efficiency over convention combustion engine vehicles.
