Winning awards has become a yearly affair for Mitsubishi vehicles. This time around, monthly car magazine Autocar ASEAN has awarded two category wins in its annual awards to the face lifted Mitsubishi Triton and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport GL. The Triton won the best Pick-up category while the Pajero Sport was named best Large SUV. At the recent New Straits Times/Maybank Car of the Year 2010 (COTY) Awards, the Pajero won the SUV category (RM280, 000-RM350, 000).

Autocar ASEAN Awards

The Triton has made the best Pick-up award its own since it was launched in Malaysia in 2006, claiming the title no less than four times from Autocar ASEAN and four times from New Straits Times/Maybank Car of the Year Awards. In 2009, the Triton won best Pick-up awards from both publications and has successfully defended the titles. It’s also the only truck in Malaysia that can claim to have an entire range of award winning variants.

The Pajero Sport GS 4X4 variant won the Large SUV award from Autocar ASEAN last year and the new GL variant has done the same for 2010, impressing the judges by being “large, spacious, hardy and equipped with modern diesel engines”.

Since launched in 2009, the seven-seater Pajero Sport – which counts space, ride comfort, robustness, economy and a Dakar Rally heritage as its strengths – has been a serial winner. It also took home the Large SUV champion at the NST/Maybank COTY Awards 2009.

Mitsubishi displays innovative electric concept ca...

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, the importer and distributor of Mitsubishi Motors vehicles in Malaysia, officially opened its pavilion at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) 2010 today.

Themed Drive@Earth, the main attractions are the Concept PX-MiEV and the i-MiEV SPORT AIR Concept, innovative electric-powered vehicles that preview the future of motoring.

“Mitsubishi Motors’ Drive@Earth corporate tagline drives the company to achieve an ideal balance between environmental and dynamic performance, building cars that not only care for the world we life in, but the occupants within. The goal is towards a sustainable future, but not at the expense of driving pleasure,” said Tetsuya Oda, Chief Executive Officer of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

“Global warming is accelerating the need to reduce greenhouse gases, and automobiles will need to adapt to today’s landscape. Mitsubishi Motors is very advanced in its electric vehicle programme and has already put to market the pioneering i-MiEV electric car, which emits zero tailpipe emissions and doesn’t consume a drop of fuel,” he added.

However, Mitsubishi Motors has not stopped developing and perfecting the EV (Electric Vehicle) drivetrain, and these efforts are demonstrated by the Concept PX-MiEV and i-MiEV SPORT AIR, concept cars that combine eco-friendliness with the driving pleasure that has become synonymous with the Mitsubishi Motors brand.

The Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV is a plug-in hybrid crossover powered by the latest Mitsubishi Plug-in Hybrid System. This all-new system was designed to allow the vehicle to be driven in full-electric mode, with a 1.6-litre MIVEC gasoline engine generating electricity to assist the front and rear electric motors as and when required. This eliminates the issue of limited range, which has so far confined EVs to being city cars.

Blending Mitsubishi’s sporting heritage with leading EV expertise, the i MiEV SPORT AIR is a concept for a sporty electric vehicle (hence SPORT) with a detachable “clear cutaway” roof panel which brings a wide open feel to the interior (hence AIR). This concept is in line with Mitsubishi Motors’ Drive@earth tagline and intention to deliver fun-to-drive motoring while placing a new emphasis on environmental issues.

Based on the production i MiEV’s rear-midship platform, the i MiEV SPORT AIR wears a dramatic teardrop-shaped body that tapers towards the rear for good aerodynamics. The “clear cutaway” roof panel incorporates a solar inlay that uses printed circuit board graphics in its design.

As a sports version of the i-MiEV, the SPORT AIR uses a more powerful version of the permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that powers the standard car, generating 60 kW of power and 230 Nm of torque (i-MiEV makes 47 kW and 180 Nm).

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia is also displaying their latest models at KLIMS 2010 – the ASX compact crossover and the Lancer Sportback sedan, enhanced with additional parts and accessories to inspire the public and owners on the possibilities available to them.

Mitsubishi ASXMitsubishi ASX

The all-new ASX compact crossover was launched in Malaysia last month and has received encouraging response for its city friendly ‘Smart Size’, high quality interior, nippy handling and trendy looks.

The Lancer Sportback is a stylish and sporty hatchback as it is, but the KLIMS showcar ups the ante with original Ralliart parts in and out.

The popular Triton pick-up truck is also kitted out for display. A 2-DIN touch screen ICE system with navigation, leather seats, auto climate control, chrome rear step bumper, front bumper guard, sports bar, pipe-style side steps and a reverse camera are among the enhancements added to Malaysia’s most awarded pick-up truck.
